Telstra warning customers to avoid electromagnetic energy
TESLTRA has sent a text message to its mobile customers to encourage them to take steps to help prevent their exposure to electromagnetic energy (EME).
The SMS encourages customers to head to the Telstra website, where the telecommunications giant has shared information from various health organisations about the potential dangers of heavy mobile phone use.
''Recently the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), conducted a review on radio frequency electromagnetic energy, which included mobile phones and base stations, and its potential association with cancer in humans,'' the site says.
Following a recent study into mobile phones and cancer, the IARC has concluded that although much evidence is ''inadequate'', they found a 40% higher risk of tumours in a working group of people who had been heavy mobile phone users.
Dr Jonathan Samet (University of Southern California, USA), overall chairman of the working group, indicated that ''the evidence, while still accumulating, was strong enough to support a conclusion and the 2B classification. The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk.''
Telstra recommends the following World Health Organization tips:
Using hands-free devices to keep mobiles away from the body.
Limiting the number and length of calls made on mobiles.
Using the phone in areas of good reception which reduces exposure to EME which will be transmitting at a reduced power.
